This is the kind Until sunrise scene that can no longer be archived on Twitch when streamed via the PS4’s share button.

To update: A Sony representative sent Ars the following statement on the matter: “We are currently working on a solution that will enable archiving of Until sunrise Twitch streams because this feature was inadvertently disabled. We’re humbled by the community’s reception of the game and excited to see fans share experiences on Twitch and YouTube. We apologize for the inconvenience and will provide an update once the issue has been resolved.”

Original story

If you want to catch your favorite Twitch personality while playing Sony’s recent horror title Until sunrise, you may need to make time to see them play live. Twitch Confirmed late yesterday that “the publisher has disabled archiving for this game”, meaning that live gameplay shared on Twitch via the PS4’s built-in Share button will not be permanently saved for later viewing. “We’re reaching out to hopefully make it possible,” Twitch said.

Sony didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment on the matter, but the blocked archive only makes sense as a way to stop the spread of spoilers for the game. That’s a somewhat legitimate concern from Sony’s point of view, like Until sunriseIts story-heavy and action-light gameplay make it the kind of game that many people might want to check out online instead of spending money to actually play. Our own review copy of the game was jam-packed with a long list of story moments that we were asked not to spoil in our pre-release review (not that we’d do such a thing, anyway).

However, as a spoiler prevention measure, it seems laughably ineffective to block Share button archiving on Twitch. Players can still stream the game via an external game capture device and do whatever they want with the resulting video. A quick search on YouTube turns up dozens of gameplay clips, walkthroughs, and “Let’s Play” commentaries, including some long playthroughs streamed live over the new YouTube Gaming service. While watching these videos robs the viewer of the story choices so vital to the game’s outcome, there are enough different playthroughs that a determined viewer could piece together the branching paths if they wanted to.

Unless Sony is ready to really declare war and issue DMCA takedown notices on everyone Until sunrise footage on the internet (and there is absolutely no sign of this being the case), blocking Twitch archiving in this way is like trying to prevent a house from being flooded during a storm by putting up a single sandbag. Right now, this is a move that doesn’t seem to serve any real purpose beyond annoying a subset of PS4 users who want to conveniently save their game streams.
