Most online game developers are tackling the persistent problem of in-game cheating by simply issuing blanket bans, hoping to completely eliminate the problem players from their universe. Rockstar takes a slightly different approach to online play Max Payne 3however, have cheaters play in a cheat-only quarantine area where they can’t infect the healthy masses of law-abiding players.

As discussed in a recent Rockstar blog post, everyone has confirmed that they use hacks to unlock powers like invincibility, infinite adrenaline, or modified scores. Max Payne 3 are placed in a “Cheaters Pool” for online matches, where they can taste their own medicine by playing only with other cheaters. Rockstar says it may eventually decide to exonerate some of these players, making them part of the general gameplay population again, but that any further cheating beyond that point “will result in their indefinite ban.”

While this may initially seem like a poetic punishment for those looking to get around the rules of the game, we’re a little intrigued by the potential for the “Cheaters Pool” to evolve into a new way to play that some players might prefer to give. The challenge for players exiled to this rule-free land stems not only from the normal battle of headshots, but in the shadowy metagame where hackers compete to see who can massage the code to give them the ultimate advantage.

The end result of this hacking arms race would likely be a hellish in-game landscape, where players equipped with ultimate power unleash death with hair-raising efficiency and no one has much fun. But getting to that point would be the fun part. It’s as if Major League Baseball suddenly opened up a second, parallel league where players can take performance-enhancing drugs and teams can use a high-precision pitching machine that throws nothing but 125 mph fastballs to the corners of the plate. The games may end up being a messy mess, but they’re likely to attract a lot of fans and players who want to see just how far the “baseball” experience can go.
