Yesssss Renegade Ops! For free!

In an effort to remind PC gamers of the game back catalog of years past, Sega’s PR team launched a campaign last week called “Make War, Not Love.” While this giveaway focused on free DLC for a trio of PC games, the campaign drew more attention to the wholesale giveaways of unrelated Sega games that just had to show up and provide an email address.

The campaign concluded on Saturday with the primary portion of the popularity contest heading towards Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War II. Players of that game will receive free DLC in the near future. Anyone else can currently come to the site and sign up for a Steam code which, when redeemed, grants full access to a trio of freebies: Viking: Battle of Asgard, Gunstar heroesand Renegade Ops.

Two of them rank among the best co-op shooters of all time – at least, in this humble author’s opinion. 2011 Renegade Ops is a delightful, twin-stick reimagining of the 1980s action game Jackal, as it asks two players to drive souped-up gun-mounted four-by-fours and blow up archetypal terrorists. Meanwhile, 1993 Gunstar heroes needs little introduction for any Mega Drive or Genesis owner, but if you’ve never played it before, this frantic, side-scrolling shooter really put game studio Treasure on the map, which was founded by ex-Konami staffers to get some of the craziest video games of the 90s.

Feel free to ignore the ho-hum, hack-and-slash combat of Vikinghowever.

Players who had already stumbled upon the site earlier this week had the opportunity to claim a number of other Sega freebies via Steam, including ’90s beat-’em-up Streets of Anger 2graffiti-laden classic Jetset radioand underrated future shooter from 2012 Binary domain. Those giveaways are now closed.

Sega’s giveaway page will warn you that codes for the latest freebie trio can take up to three days to arrive, and there’s a newsletter signup requirement to claim them, so just set a reminder to check your spam queue for a Steam code in a few days and unsubscribe. Two out of three of these freebies are totally worth it. This application will expire very soon and has no time frame by the way, so don’t hesitate to jump on it.
