Page Six, a gossip and culture spin-off of the New York Postreported yesterday that Disney executives are unhappy with the current version of Rogue One: A Star Wars Storythe spin-off that has to tell the story in between Star Wars episodes III and IV. According to anonymous sources, the film is now slated for an “expensive reshoot” in the summer ahead of its December release.
A source explained that “the movie doesn’t test well” and “Disney isn’t going to take a back seat.”
Screen testing a movie is common in Hollywood and adjusting the movie based on the screen tester’s comments is routine, but the Page Six sources seem to suggest that these changes go beyond that.
A Disney source also told Page Six that “the film team and studio always anticipated additional takes and second unit work to make the movie the best it could be, and the actors knew there would be additional takes.”
Ars has reached out to Disney and will update if we receive a response.
The news is surprising because the Villain One trailer seemed solid and was well received by many of the franchise’s most ardent fans. The Page Six article seems to suggest that the director, Gareth Edwards, tends to take risks and keep studio presence at bay. This may have caused friction between those studio execs, leading one of Page Six’s “movie insider” sources to comment that “Villain One has fallen short of what JJ Abrams did Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens. So Disney has ordered new recordings.”
