Mystery Science Theater 3000 will return with 14 new full episodes, all of which will stream on Netflix, according to the Hollywood reporter, reporting from San Diego Comic-Con. The new series features Felicia Day and Patton Oswalt, who play mad scientist Kinga Forrester and “Son of TV’s Frank” henchman, respectively.
Mary Jo Pehl and Bill Corbett, who played Pearl Forrester and Crow T. Robot, will also join the revival, and former MST3K writer/actor/director/puppeteer Kevin Murphy also participates.
The series is the result of a 2015 Kickstarter from Joel Hodgson—the MST3K the creator set a $2 million minimum goal to make three full episodes, but they handily surpassed that goal, raising $5.7 million. Hodgson will remain on board as the show’s executive producer and writer.
Former lead writer of The daily show Elliott Kalan has been brought in to be the lead writer for this new round of riffs.
The partnership with Netflix comes as the streaming platform has spent $5 billion investing in original content. Developing original shows has long been a growth strategy of Netflix – it’s seen as a way to support slowing subscriber growth in the US. The streaming platform has also moved to air some of its original shows on broadcast TV as an additional source of revenue and to attract new subscribers.
It’s unclear how much influence Netflix will have in producing this MST3K revival, because a lot of money has already been raised for it. We also don’t know exactly when these 14 new episodes will premiere. Ars has reached out to Netflix and will update when we receive a response. Keep practicing your robot roll call until we know more.
