It’s been over a year since Sony first announced its jump into the VR headset market with the GDC 2014 reveal of Project Morpheus. Since then, there’s been a new Oculus development kit (and a new prototype behind closed doors), a commercial release for the Oculus-powered Gear VR, and the recent announcement of the Valve/HTC-powered “Re Vive” headset. So today Sony is holding an “intimate event” to update the press and public on where Morpheus’ efforts stand in the rapidly changing VR world. Sony is keeping details of the event close to its chest, but we wouldn’t be surprised if the PlayStation maker is ready to announce the official name, price and/or release date at the event. A few major first-party game announcements or third-party game announcements could also go a long way in convincing skeptics that their PlayStation 4 needs LCD glasses. Also, given how fast the LCD screen and head-tracking tech is advancing, we’d expect the headset to have arguably more impressive specs now than what we saw a year ago.
We’re expecting about an hour of announcements starting at 3 p.m. Pacific Time, followed by some hands-on time with everything Sony has to hand. Whatever it is, you’ll hear it here first.
