First trailer for Destructiondirected by Alex Garland and based on the incredible novel by Jeff VanderMeer.

The novel of Jeff VanderMeer Destruction, the first in his acclaimed Southern Reach trilogy, seems never to be made into a movie. It’s the dark psychological story of scientists exploring a region of Florida called Area X, which abruptly began to defy the laws of physics and biology. Perhaps it has been visited by aliens or has become the gateway to another dimension. Perhaps toxic waste has finally become aware. The unnamed biologist who is our hero has no idea; she just wants to see this new ecosystem for herself.

A mysterious organization called the Southern Reach sends her to the region with a highly trained team, and what they see… defies description. In the novel, we see the world through the eyes of the biologist: altered animals, sentient mold, eerie lights and strange architecture in the eerie inverted “tower” that extends deep into the ground. The team psychologist is constantly hypnotizing everyone — previous explorers couldn’t survive without hypnosis — adding to our sense of the surreal.

Somehow director Alex Garland (Ex machine) has evoked that same sense of dreamy, horrifying awe in the film’s first trailer, due out in February 2018. Natalie Portman plays the biologist, and we see the bizarre features of Area X seeping around her as if the entire ecosystem has been haunted in some way. Garland is probably the perfect director for this feature film. To be Ex machine was an enchanting mix of action and philosophy. My suspicion is that this film will work its way deep under your skin.

The good news is that you can read and watch the entire Southern Reach trilogy Ex machinebefore Destruction is from.
